As HR Pros, we started kicking the Performance Management process around about 5-6 years ago, saying everything from “it needs to change” to “it needs to go”. And then we saw the brave moves of some of the larger brand organizations take the platform and claim: “we have stopped doing Performance Management”. It certainly got all of our attention, but can I just say something here?
They didn’t stop it. They just decided to take it more seriously and approach it differently. Which is great and probably high-time. The point is, that there are no one-size fits all programs to managing and measuring performance and it still needs to get done. Each organization has its own unique culture and leadership, therefore the approach to PM should be designed and aligned accordingly. Here’s what we do all have in common though: People.
At this week’s HR Leaders Summit (November 13th and 14th) in Toronto, Canada, Dr. David Rock leads the charge as keynote speaker with the topic of “Reinventing Performance Management”. Dr. Rock is the co-founder of an international organization called The Neuroleadership Institute and Summit. One of his core messages and focus is how Performance Management at its heart, is about “Quality Conversations”. Finally, a thought leader who brings our attention to the importance of talking with our people.
He goes further to say that it’s not just having conversations, it’s how you have them as well. And there it is… the skill of leading an engaging and thoughtful, motivating discussion. Not all of us can do it and we need to stop thinking that just anybody can.
The topic goes further to touch on the necessary tech tools that are required to facilitate the conversations. He also talks about what and when you need to measure as it relates to the responsibilities of the individual’s role with again, how technology can help.
We couldn’t agree more with the good Doctor. In fact, we are pleased and proud to say that all of the above are the cornerstone approaches to why Sprigg is so successful. Literally, for years, we’ve been saying what we believe to be the essence of measuring and managing people: “Performance Management is a conversation“.
